Weed Control

Even the most beautiful lawn is likely to have weeds appear at some point. Keeping a lawn "weed free" takes more than just a couple of treatments each year. Thin areas of grass will usually have more weeds than thick, healthy lawns. A healthy stand of grass is the very best weed prevention there is.

There are two major weed groups that grow in your lawn throughout the year:

Broadleaf weeds
(onions, clovers, henbit, dandelions, chickweed, oxalis, etc.)
Grassy weeds
(crabgrass, dallisgrass, etc.)

Each weed group has specific chemicals that are used for post emergent control. These chemicals can only work on these weeds within a certain temperature range. The colder the temperatures are, the slower weed control results will be. It will take 2-3 weeks in the spring or fall to see the full effects of a weed application. On the other hand, grassy weeds require 80 degree days and 70 degree nights for control. If it does not reach this range, you will see no results at all.

We are often asked, “Why do all of the weeds not die after just one spraying?” Simply put, no one herbicide is capable of providing that type of results. Because of the two major weed types listed above, each type has herbicides that will control them. These chemicals can only work on these weeds when the weeds are actively growing. How quickly you see results is usually dependent upon the temperature. Cooler temperatures yield slower results, while warmer temperatures usually produce quicker results.

Here are a few practices you can follow to help us help you win the war on weeds:

Mow regularly
This provides a thicker lawn to choke out the weeds.

Water
Watering may not be required during rainy periods, but always maintain a watering program during drier periods.

Summer Weeds
Probably the toughest to control, but regular mowing will help keep them under control.

Regular Fertilization
Is the best way to get a healthy stand of grass which will then help keep weeds out.

Working together, we can keep your lawn beautiful, healthy and keep most of the weeds out too.
